2013 Miss Teen Canada – World Blog Network Assignment Number Three

What would I do if I had a $250K budget to shoot a TV spot for Signature Towels? I would create a unique and fun commercial that would target children and adults everywhere. Let your imagination take over as you visualize this…

*Eye of the Tiger is playing low*

The summer heat is blazing down on a lush green golf course. The beautiful flowers and ponds are featured in a brief  scene-establishing clip, and the camera falls upon the first hole. The flag waves dramatically in the wind. At first nothing other than the course and sun are caught in the commercial. All of a sudden, the camera whips around to the left and captures the other half of the setting that was not shown at the beginning. There is a massive crowd consisting of thousands of golf fans who are watching a game of golf. The majority of them look as though they have just been swimming, they are so wet with sweat. However, they are not the only victims of the heat. The first man in the golf match is Tiger Wood. Tiger is focusing intently on a hole in the distance, the final hole in his game. You can see the sweat dripping from his forehead.  The camera focuses on the cheering fans and their intense reactions as Tiger prepares to take his shot. Looking confident, he takes a few practice strokes and eventually takes his big swing. BAM!-the ball is off on its way. The camera follows the ball across the setting, finally it lands a few feet from the hole and the crowd goes wild. He smiles with pride and waves to the audience, taking a step back. The audience is shown whipping their heads in sync to look at the second golfer.

*Music Changes to Kung-Fu Fighting*

The screen shows a black shoe taking a slow step down on the turf, music begins to play. The camera view raises slowly and dramatically to the rhythm of the music  to reveal Psy (from Gangnam Style), who looks very happy. He is wearing his classic blue suit, with black and white accents, and thick black glasses. He has with him two caddies who are the same ladies from his Gangnam Style music video. The camera focuses on the audience members, who all appear really confused and to be suffering from the heat. Tiger Woods rolls his eyes and snickers at Psy, who does not seem intimidated by him.  Psy pulls a gold club from his jewel studded golf bag, swinging it a few times in the air, and then stands ready at the tee. Once more, Tiger is shown laughing at Psy, this time with a friend in a suit. Psy lifts the club for his swing and the music stops. BAM!

The camera focuses on the gasping and shocked faces of the audience members. Their faces are shown in slow motion to exaggerate their shocked responses. One audience member in particular is featured making a very funny and weird face of awe as he follows the ball with his finger. Tiger’s face is also shown looking worried and his fists begin to clench slowly. Psy is shown nodding and smiling as the ball is still flying through the air in slow motion. The next clip shown is of the hole. The red flag is waving in the air and the golf ball lands right in the hole! Gangnam Style starts to play very loudly and the camera focuses back on Psy. He raises his hands excitedly into the air with a huge smile on his face. His caddies begin to jump around excitedly. The audience is shown cheering and dancing to Gangnam style, looking much more lively than before. The silly-faced audience member is shown fainting from excessive joy. Tiger is then featured smashing his club off the grass, crying and having a meltdown.

The camera then zooms in on Psy, who is being handed a Black and white towel that has “Gangnam Golf Pro” written on it. His face takes up the majority of the shot, however the towel is still shown and highlighted as the central focus of the frame. The Gangnam Style music turns down, and smiling, he wipes a single bead of sweat off of his forehead with the towel. Psy then looks into the camera and says, “Whatever you do, do it your way. Signature Personalized golf towels! Dry off like a pro.” He winks in the camera, and the view pans out to a shot of the the hole, entire crowd, and two contenders. The scene is semi-chaotic but very lively and fun.

WHO IS THIS COMMERCIAL FOR?

The product targets men and women who enjoy golf, therefore making this commercial geared toward men and women who golf. This is made clear through the scene’s setting and the involvement of golf extraordinaire, Tiger Woods. In addition, the trendy new pop icon, Psy, is featured in the commercial to attract the interest of young viewers. Psy’s presence in the commercial will capture attention focus of people flipping through channels and make them watch the commercial. Young children will be enticed to buy the product for a parent or friend because it is endorsed by these famous celebrities. The commercial is fun and will be just as catchy as the Gangnam Style song, making it sure to stay in their heads of viewers! The majority of the budget must be spent on paying Tiger Woods and Psy to be in the commercial. I would allot approximately $75,000 to be paid to each celebrity for their participation. The background actors will each be paid $100 for their participation, and there will be a remaining $50,000 left after all the actors and set people have been paid. Setting costs will be very minimal because a sponsor will offer their golf course as a setting for the commercial in exchange for recognition. Similar to the setting cost, wardrobe costs will also be nonexistent due to the support of sponsors. The additional $50,00 will be spent on editing the commercial, and whatever props may be necessary to have on set. Thankfully the commercial is fairly inexpensive to produce.

signature towel, personal towel, monogrammed gift

I hope my commercial spot was able to entertain you! Check out the signature towels website also if you are at all interested by the product, I know I am!

Wow, thirty days until Miss Teen Canada-World 2013 is here! I am so excited and have been working hard to be prepared for July.

However, this past week I was forced to take a little break from pageantry. The preparation for nationals was pushed aside and my main focus was studying for my exams. Today I wrote a French exam, a Biology exam, and yesterday I had a Chemistry exam! Studying was beyond tiring, I think in the past 3 days I have gotten 8 hours of sleep and studied close to 24 hours; thankfully I had a great friend to study with. My friend Waylon and I studied Chemistry on Monday and Tuesday and we worked together so efficiently, I learned so much! It is great to have versatile friends, ones you can chat with, go out to a social event with, or with whom you can study like mini-Einsteins.  All we had to do was…

All the studying definitely paid off because my exams were a breeze and now, I am done high school forever! I can’t believe how fast the years go, but hey- they don’t get any slower and so you must make the most of them. That is what I try to do on a daily basis, and it is for this reason that next year I will be attending Western University for Health Sciences and specializing in neuroscience. I would love to become a brain surgeon because I feel that if you are capable of obtaining the knowledge required to save someone’s life, then you should. If I were to save even just one life, I would feel like I made a truly positive impact. Not many people understand or enjoy sciences because it does get relatively complex, but science is a huge passion of mine. The mystery of the universe and life and energy is just so fascinating to me. Check out how similar the structure of a brain cell is to the universe…

Pretty neat, huh? I’m done my nerdy science tangent now…

So, over the next few weeks I will be training hard and eating right, pushing myself to be the best I can be. Exercise is physically rewarding but most importantly it is mentally rewarding, there is no feeling better than pride and satisfaction! I’m also going to start planning my outfits for the week-long pageant stay soon. I love getting ready; clothes, makeup and accessories are so fun to experiment with! It has always been a secret passion of mine to become a fashion designer. It is funny, I know, to go from discussing my hopeful future in brain surgery to confessing my desire to be a fashion icon. I used to have so many booklets of designs as a child. Mind you, I also collected Yu-Gi-Oh cards and watched SpongeBob like it was my day job. Mind you, my strange diversity in aspirations does not end there, but I will save that for another day.

AS I WAS SAYING….

The remainder of this month will include me looking for another sponsor or two, practicing my dance routine, and making sure I am on top of all my paper-work. It’s funny, I never thought I would have “paper-work” at the age of 17. Speaking of which, I almost forgot my 18th birthday is at the end of this month! What a bitter-sweet feeling to grow up. You are no longer a child and life gets more stressful as you get older, which can be kind of upsetting, but at the same time I am so excited to experience new things, meet new people, discover new ideas and concepts. On that note, I will sign off.

I hope you enjoyed my exam-science-pageant-birthday rant! Stay posted!

xo Bianca

(P.S.)…If you thought that the picture of the neuron and the universe was cool then watch the video below as it attempts to explain the connection. It is an emerging concept, and similar to other scientific theories will endure years of doubt until it can be proven further. This is my favourite branch of science as it attempts to explain how one person can change reality by simply thinking or feeling a certain way. Who knows… give it a click if you are interested!

2013 Miss Teen Canada – World Blog Network Assignment Number Two

What’s more wonderful than Canada’s own Paramount Canada’s Wonderland? Just a few kilometres from my house, located on 9580 Jane St, you will find one of the best amusement parks on the planet. This amusement park brings in more than 3.35 million people each year. Many of these guests include tourists from all across the world! I have had several family members come visit from other countries, and all of them have made it a point to visit Canada’s Wonderland. Even Canadians flock to it several times a year, and its splendor is nothing new to us! The proof is in the pudding! Canada’s wonderland is quite a sight to see, but mostly, a sight to experience.

Canada’s Wonderland features the longest Wooden Coaster – The Mighty Canadian Minebuster and Canada’s first inverted coaster – Flight Deck.  Check out some footage of the Leviathan, the park’s newest and scariest coaster. It also happens to be the largest rollercoaster in Canada!

Whether you are a child, a teen, or an adult, Canada’s Wonderland has something for everyone! North America’s largest variety of coasters can be found here, however, there is much more than just coasters! Canada’s Wonderland features over 20 awesome thrill rides, a water park, a children’s park, an interactive animatronic dinosaur park, entertainment, and dining!

Upon entering Canada’s Wonderland you are instantly struck by the joyous atmosphere. You are greeted by adorable costumed characters, cute shops, beautiful gardens, music and a magnificent waterfall the moment you set foot inside the park. The colours, smells and energy emitted by everyone is so lively that you can’t help but smile! I personally recommend trying the funnel cake and the ice cream cookie sandwiches, they are unbelievable and undeniably the most delicious sweets in the park.

If you are a thrill seeker and love roller coasters (like me), I would definitely recommend going on the Behemoth. It is my personal favourite, accelerating at a speed of 125 km an hour and the first drop is 230 feet high! If you aren’t a fan of big drops, then I would recommend taking a nice relaxing ride on the lazy river in the water park.

Here are some tips you will find useful on your next trip to wonderland, whether you’re going with friends or family:

1.Wear lots of sunscreen!

2.Try to go on a weekday so the lines are shorter!

3. Drink a lot of water because it can be quite hot in the summer!

4. Bring a backpack to carry your things with ease!

5. Do not wear flip flops because trying not to lose them on rides will take away from your fun!

6. Plan which rides you want to go on in advance so you are able to get to them all!

7. Come early so parking isn’t mission impossible.

8. Bring a bathing suit so you can enjoy the water rides and water park!

9. Take a ton of pictures so you will forever remember the amazing time you had at Canada’s Wonderland!

10. Buy your tickets in advance for a cheaper ticket price!

Here is an old pic of me and my friends at wonderland!

Canada’s Wonderland makes a great day trip for any visitor and is one of my favourite places in Canada. I usually go at least once or twice a year, and I hope my blog post has motivated you to visit as well because it will be a time you could never forget! A big thank you to Skylon Tower and Niagara Falls for sponsoring the Miss Teen Canada World 2nd blog challenge! I hope my review was enjoyable!

This is it, my fundraising campaign for Free the Children officially came to an end on Tuesday. I had so much fun raising the money, but hey- I guess that’s why they call it FUN-draising… (I know my jokes are corny.)

I had never taken on an initiative like this before and I am so glad that it was a pageant requirement. In addition to how wonderful it feels to give back to the community, there is so much more to gain from fundraising!

What did I gain? A ton of fundraising experience and a big lesson!

To begin, my original fundraising goal was $20,000. Clearly, I did not realize how much money that actually was and I set my bar a little too high. It is great to aim high and dream big, but I learned it is best to stay realistic when it comes to a monetary goal! I finished my fundraising with an exact total of $3000! I am very proud and owe it to my friends and family who helped support me throughout these long 6 weeks.

Throughout my six weeks, I hosted one danceathon, 2 garage sales, I rented a table at a seniors home yard sale, held an online sale over Facebook, partnered with Stella & Dot for a percentage of their sales, held a raffle at school for WWE tickets, set up a webpage for online donations, had a family BBQ party and lastly, a car wash! Not to mention I received donations from several friends and family members as well. It was a lot of work planning events, signing up for permits, finding volunteers, setting up yard sales, but it was well worth it and my organization skills have never been stronger!

I had originally planned to teach dance at schools for a few weeks and received support and coverage from the TDSB website! Sadly, after contacting many schools, I realized the interest was very low.

Now it's time to focus on other things, my talent!

However, as my fundraising has come to an end it is time to focus my energy elsewhere… my talent! I am getting very excited to perform on talent night and thankfully my aunt Jasmine has an awesome basement for me to practice in. Actually, I think I hear music playing now… Stay tuned & thanks for reading!

Planner Chaos!

What a busy  weekend this was! Mind you, I live for busy weekends. As per usual, my planner was my best friend as I tackled my Saturday math class, a garage sale on Saturday and a car wash on Sunday (all for Free The Children,) and an essay all in one weekend!

A big thanks goes out to my grandma, who has now helped me orchestrate 3 yard sales, for her hard work and support throughout my fundraising!

Another huge thanks to my friends: Jacqui Nelson, Alexa Shtun, Liam Robinson, Phil Dixon, Jamie Powell, Nestor Maslej, Mahad Bouraleh, Rachel Passarelli, Luca Tirella, Javar Jennings, Lynn Roeder, my adorable cousins and sisters for coming to help out and clean cars! Thank you as well to my school administration for allowing me to host my event on their property. It was fun and a great success!

In addition to that, I have begun practicing my talent routine for the pageant. I was lucky enough to be sponsored by Miss Jade of Jade’s Hip Hop Academy. I will be going there again tonight to practice. I am so honoured she took me on as a student, Miss Jade has even had her students perform for the prime minister! The moves I am learning are pretty challenging but I am super excited for the final product. Hip-hop has always been my favourite type of dance since I first started it in 2003.

Here is a photo of me and some members of my competitive dance team back in 2009!

So, there was my little update for you all. School has been really busy with final assignments and exams coming up, not to mention prom! I hope everybody has a wonderful week! Stay tuned…

2013 Miss Teen Canada – World Blog Network Assignment Number One

Have you ever heard of Mountain Equipment Co-op?

YOU HAVEN’T?

Well…

Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) is an outdoor sporting goods store that began operations in Toronto in 1985. Upon deciding their facility was not energy efficient enough, they moved to a new location on King Street in 1998. There, they built the first retail property of its kind, a ”green building,” making them one of Canada’s most environmentally conscious retailersA green building uses eco-friendly construction practices and materials and saves money while trying to preserve natural resources. Their new 42,000 square foot facility was built using 55% recycled materials, a great eco-feat! These materials included wood recovered from Montreal’s Marconi building and from the bottom of the Ottawa River!

DID YOU KNOW… MEC meets LEED standards and has two certified retail stores in Canada, in Montreal and Winnipeg?

Here is a picture of the MEC in Winnipeg, Manitoba! It is LEED certified!

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a third party certification program that has been around since 2002 and is internationally recognized as an accepted standard for greenbuilding certification. They provide owners tools to measure their buildings environmental impact, positively influencing eco-consciousness within communities. MEC are so eco-oriented, they are LEED certified!

Did you see that flat white roof on the Winnipeg image? Now that’s going above and beyond! You too can conserve energy, like MEC, by implementing Tiocoat flat roof solutions. Tiocoat is also LEED certified and they make white roof or rubber roof coatings that reduce energy costs.

As you can see in the diagram above, when the heat rays from the sun hit a white, coated roof, the majority of the heat from the rays is reflected away which results in lower A/C costs! Not to mention, they guarantee their roofs for the life of the building!

The Toronto MEC has several architectural features that make it unique!

Here is a granulated pile of Blast furnace slag!

1. It is composed of clay brick, concrete block, and Owen Sound natural stone. In addition to all materials coming from local suppliers in order to reduce transportation costs and energy, the timber used was recovered from buildings and log booms.

2. Also, to divert waste from landfills, the concrete contains 50% blast furnace slag, a by-product of steel manufacturing that is not typically reused. This type requires 75% less energy during production than regular cement.

Desulphogypsum

3.The wallboard is also made up of a product that would otherwise be landfilled, Desulphogypsum (DSG) is a by-product of coal-fired thermo-electric power stations.

4. Building walls and the roof are insulated with Rockwool that has 50% recycled content. It is made of fibres spun from melted minerals and bonded with various binders. This Rockwool provides insulation above the Model National Energy Code standard.

Rockwool

5. The Maple flooring used is sourced from a supplier certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, using ecologically and socio-economically sustainable harvesting methods.

6. Wood and concrete floors are exposed because minimal floor and ceiling coverings reduce material consumption. Where carpet is typically used, there is sectionally replaceable tile, placed without adhesive. Instead of paints, finishes, and adhesives MEC uses non volatile organic compounds.

7. A roof garden is planted with meadow plants, flowers, and grasses that don’t need much watering. The plants offset Carbon dioxide (C02) generation while carrying out photosynthesis and the soil helps insulate the building to reduce heating requirements.

8. Skylights run the length of the building to  reduce the need for energy-consuming artificial lighting.

9. Energy efficient windows are double glazed. A microscopic metallic coating on the glass surface between the panes reduces radiant heat transfer, saving energy in air conditioning, similar to the Tiocoat flat roof solutions.

11. To raise awareness of renewable energy, a 1kW photo-voltaic electrical generation system is installed on the site.

A photovoltaic system, a.k.a. solar panels. They work by harnessing photons (light energy particles) and turning it into energy we can use!

12. Energy consumption is minimized through the use of natural ventilation. To optimize airflow, clerestory windows (the ones above eyelevel) are electronically operated.

13. Fluorescent lighting uses photocell sensor controlled electronic dimming ballasts that increase or decrease light depending on the amount of natural light available. EXIT signs are lit with high-efficiency LEDs, and the lighting in washrooms and offices are only activated when the occupancy sensors control is stimulated.

14.Covered bike parking encourages the use of bikes for trips to MEC.

15. Water consumption is reduced through low-flow, pressure-assisted toilets and faucets and other appliances.

16. Planters on the second story terrace contain are watered with an efficient subsurface drip system.

17. MEC plants trees outside the store to increases urban green areas and capture water to reduce demand on urban infrastructures.

So, on the contrary (to all you  Kermits,) it is easy to be green! Kudos to you Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) and your wonderful store in Toronto! Way to be a responsible supplier!

A big thanks to my sponsors for my great day today,

They call me cookie-monster

I had my hair done in a really fab way,

My father and I had an appearance at 4,

And we’re both a bit late getting out the door,

Sandro styled my hair, he’s number one,

However time was running out by the time it was done!

So we said goodbye to Salon Collage, the best salon around,

And hoped in the truck becoming Cordi Bakery bound!

Signing autographs, taking pics, and eating delicious food,

It would be an understatement to say I was in a happy mood,

My dad, some of the kids and I, at the Cordi Bakery!

The kids were so cute, and they all looked so happy,

It truly warmed my heart (not to sound sappy),

So a big thanks to my sponsors because I had so much fun!

And thanks to those who came out, I appreciate it a ton,

The Cordi Bakery rocks, you need to check it out!

Try the pizza and you’ll know what I’m talking about,

I hope you enjoyed my rhyme, a little something new

This is Bianca, thanking you. XOX

Here we are with the Cordi's, my wonderful sponsors!

Imagine a herd of buffalo, stampeding through the wild; they run together and for a purpose. It is quite a majestic and inspiring sight. Well yesterday, I was in a herd of my own as I participated in the 10K Run for Kid’s With Cancer in downtown Toronto, and without a doubt, this was one of the best things I have done in my life.

Why was it so awesome? Well…

1.The sights were incredible!

Never had I ever seen such a large mass of people running in one direction. I made sure to take a lot of mental pictures because it was quite a sight. It was also really neat to run down Yonge St. in the middle of the road. It is usually jam packed with cars and people but it was completely empty for all of us runners. Not to mention, all the buildings and skyscrapers made for an awesome view throughout the run.

2. The energy was so positive!

Having a huge group of about 24,000 people all running together for a cause is so beautiful. Everyone had inspirational messages on their backs to motivate the runners behind them, and they sure worked! At one point, I felt tired and contemplated walking for a minute. Then, I saw a sign, “Keep going! You can do it!” and I did it! Not to mention, friends and family members were everywhere along the way cheering everybody on to continue and push hard. It wonderful to see everybody encouraging eachother. It felt like all the runners together made up a new family, one of complete strangers, yet one so loving and supportive.

3. I had a goal, and I reached it!

Almost at the finish line!

When I first signed up for the race, I was a little unsure of how 10K would go. Until then, I had only run about 6K at most and that took me about 40 minutes each time. Training, and strengthening my muscles proved to be quite effective because I completed the entire race in 51 minutes and 18 seconds! It felt amazing to know I had done something that I was unsure of at the beginning and that it was for such a wonderful cause. I felt overwhelmingly proud when I crossed the finish line and can’t wait to feel that pride again.

After finishing the run! (yes- fanny packs are still cool)

So to summarize, I loved this run because while enjoying sights that left me in awe, and receiving positive encouragement from strangers, I was able to surpass a goal I had set for myself. If not the best thing I have done, or the best feeling I have ever experienced, it was definitely one of the best!

Push yourself to be the best you possibly can!

THIS JUST IN: Looking your best, makes others happy.

Seems like a weird connection doesn’t it. Why do people care how I look? Why would that make them happy? Well… I had a revelation the other day and I will explain to you how others can benefit by you taking care of yourself.

The other morning I had a few extra minutes before I had to rush off to school. I spent more time than I usually am able to putting together a trendy outfit. I added some accesories, a bit of lip gloss and I touched up my natural curls. Needless to say, I was feeling pretty confident because I put time and effort into my appearance. Now, appearance of course- is not the be all and the end all and beauty is so diverse. But, you can’t deny the confidence boost you feel when you feel like you are at your best.

Walking through the halls that morning, I was in a wonderful mood. Furthermore, my mood kept on improving! As I passed other students in the hallway I was smiling, saying hello to strangers, holding doors; needless to say I was exuding extremely positive energy and vibes and it was catching on. I soon learned that seldom does a smile sent go unreturned and that people still appreciate common courtesy. It can be easy to forget we are all the same; we all want to be ourselves and feel that we belong. It is funny how being happy yourself, can make others happy and something as small as spending a little extra time grooming yourself can actually translate into a smile or comment that makes someone’s day, and boosts their own happiness.

So next time you are getting ready, spend a little extra time if you can. If you can’t, just make sure you remind yourself how awesome you really are. We all have confidence within, sometimes we just need help accessing it.

LOVE YOURSELF & LOVE OTHERS!

xoxo

A good friend of mine once shared this quote with me,

”You are on a rock, floating through space.”

Well, we are on a rock floating through space and when you picture it as so, not much really matters. Our global population is roughly 6,973,738,433 people. That is 6973 groups of a million people. In other words, holy cow! We are each just a single person in a pool of billions of individuals and if that doesn’t make you feel irrelevant, we can always look at the hundreds of billions of other planets in our universe that are also floating about.

“The sun is only a star

Around that star we spin

But there are many other stars

Where do we fit in?”

Similar to the lyrics of the famous song above, Child of the Universe by Craig Cassils, many of us may wonder what we are doing here if we are so miniscule compared to our universe. Life goes on, day by day, and life doesn’t wait for anyone. At any second of the day, something life changing could happen to you. At each second of every day, life changing things currently are happening to other people. We all have our own challenges, likes, dislikes, and dreams that make our lives different. However, we do share one thing in common. We are all partaking in the same journey; the journey of life.

Many people do not realize how lucky they are to live the life they have. Carpe Diem, seize the day! Or for the children of my generation… “YOLO.” In other words, every second counts on a clock that’s ticking. Gratitude, appreciation and happiness are not expressed and experienced quite often enough. This is one of the most important lessons of life, and it is often not discovered until old age.  It is the challenge of each person here on Earth, to live their lives to the fullest. Living your life to the fullest doesn’t mean living a crazy busy life; living your life to the fullest consists of enjoying every bit of it. Admire each sunset, appreciate a cool sip of water, take that second to smell your coffee, put away your cell and engage in a real conversation, hug your siblings goodnight, don’t take the little things for granted. When you enjoy the smaller things in life you realize they are actually the big things. As the saying goes, “the best things in life are free.”

Put plainly, we are all born and we all die. Don’t let your life pass you by… enjoy the smell, colour, and touch of each moment. Open your eyes to the beauty of life and that is how you come alive.

Appreciate. Engage. Admire. Love. Breath. Relax. Smile. Listen. Live.

xoxo – Bianca
